Dr Hui joined the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) as Senior Director in February 2018 and served as its Chief Technology Officer from 2019 to 2023. He has more than 30 years of experience in technology R&D, professional consultancy and higher education. Dr Hui is an expert in information security, big data analytics and trusted technology management, with extensive experience leading multi-party research projects across technologies, institutions and regions, and a wide network in Greater China and internationally. Before joining ASTRI he taught in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong for nearly 20 years, where he founded the HKU Center for Information Security and Cryptography Research, and he also taught at the National University of Singapore. He has spoken at and joined expert panels of many international academic conferences, has published more than 200 papers in international journals and conferences, and has served on the steering committee of ASIACRYPT. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science from the University of Hong Kong, and a master's degree in science and a PhD in computer science from the University of California, Davis. In the AI era, Dr Hui hopes to use his experience to help more people make better use of AI so that everyone can become a highly effective innovator.
